Traditional Caribbean Products Handcrafted in Portland Jamaica

Islenut Jamaica offers a unique collection of traditional Caribbean products that are handcrafted in Portland, Jamaica through collaboration with marginalised communities and Indigenous Peoples. We represent a diverse community of farmers, scientists and artisans who share a vision to preserve the customs and heritage that has been tested and proven relevant to Jamaica’s cultural evolution. Islenut (oil nut) is the colloquial name of the perennial Castor Bean plant which grows wild throughout the island of Jamaica. The company aptly bears its name, as authentic Black Castor Oil is our flagship product. Castor Beans are sown, grown, and harvested from a picturesque 100-Acre estate that once served as a historic Copra Plantation at the Foot of the John Crow Mountains. The farm is evenly staffed with men and women from several rural communities in the parish of Portland, and lead by a Director with more than 60 years of experience “boiling the oil.” Our Cosmetics line is beautifully complemented by Craft and Gift items designed under the instruction of Elders from neighbouring Maroon and Rasta villages. We encourage the preservation and celebration of all Jamaican communities, and maintain unwavering support to the disabled and members of the other marginalised groups that comprise the Islenut team

JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL

Castor oil (Ricinus Communis) is a nutrient-rich vegetable oil that comes from Castor Beans. Though packed with Vitamin E and useful Minerals, 90% of it is comprised of long-chained ricinoleic fatty acids that provide essential proteins and possess anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial qualities. Castor oil originated in tropical east Africa but is best-known for cosmetic and medicinal use in India and the West Indies. As a home remedy, Castor oil is used widely for a number of problems and ailments especially those related to hair, skin, joints and the intestine. Jamaican Black Castor oil is derived from roasting Castor Beans. This process alters the pH, colour and aroma of the oil which is known to stimulate the Prostaglandin E2 receptor, leading to blood vessel dilation. When applied, it increases the flow of oxygen-rich and nutrient-rich blood, and is believed to help slow or even stop the spread of germs.
